Whether we become parents by choice or by accident, the job of being a parent is not easy but it is a most rewarding and fulfilling experience which demands great patience and ingenuity on our part. We all dream of being ‘good’ and ‘perfect’ parents but our concept of being good parents varies greatly from one person to another.

Money is not everything when it comes to raising a child

Some feel that a good parent must be able to provide the child with lots of money and expensive designer goods so that the child will not want for anything, they therefore spend longer hours trying to earn more money; leaving the child to be looked after by the maid or child-minder and not spend quality time with the child. When they start feeling guilty about not spending time with their children they will give the children whatever the little demons demand.

I personally feel that the most important aspect of being a good parent is to be a happy loving parent regardless of what or how much we have so that we can have happy loving children who will grow up to be happy loving individuals.

To do that we have to spend time with our children doing fun things together and not just going to the dept stores or supermarkets which is so common amongst many parents. That is why I said that we have to be ingenuous and think of fun things to do with our children. You cannot imagine a child’s pleasure when the parents play hide and seek with them, reading together, going for walks in the park, having picnics etc. Marie loves helping me in the kitchen and washing my car with me. There are so many home activities that they can get involved in and they do not cost a cent.
